Maybe oil companies need a bailout

Remember earlier this year when oil company executives were trotted before kangaroo court hearings in the House?  Democrats were livid over high gas prices and wanted answers.

“Today, on April Fool’s Day, consumers all over America are hoping that the top executives from the five largest oil companies will tell us that these soaring gas prices are just part of some elaborate hoax,” Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming wrote at the time.

Then in May, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Fla.)  told oil execs, “I can’t say that there’s evidence that you are manipulating the price, but I believe that you probably are.”

Our wonderful lawmakers were so concerned about excessive oil company profits.  Rep. Steve Cohen, (D-Tenn.) called them “unconscionable.”

Now that gas and oil prices have plummeted, will they haul the executives back to the Hill to make sure they’re doing OK?  They could at least ask them why they decided to stop manipulating prices and reaping “unconscionable” profits.
