Of today’s Georgia Senate runoff between Saxby Chambliss and Jim Martin, The Boston Globe wrote, “The results may offer a tentative answer to questions that will ghost American politics for at least the next four years: Is there a sustainable Obama coalition, and is the Obama machine durable? Has Obama created anything greater than himself?”
It looks like the answer to both is no.
Well, I don’t actually buy the notion that the runoff is such a big deal. Sure, it’s generally good that Chambliss is going to win, but the 60-vote milestone can still be attained by Democrats on a lot of issues by simply pulling a few “moderate” Republicans to their side (which, given recent history, will not be difficult to do.)
Obama will largely get his agenda accomplished, Chambliss or no.
